Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
When should I see a psychiatrist?
When emotional, behavioral, sleep or memory symptoms last weeks, cause distress or interfere with work, studies and relationships. Thoughts of death or suicide need immediate help: in Brazil, call 188 (CVV) or go to an emergency room.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses, investigates medical causes, orders tests and can prescribe medication. A psychologist provides psychotherapy. They often work together.
Does every psychiatric appointment end with a prescription?
No. Medication is prescribed when it offers clear benefit. Many situations are treated with guidance and psychotherapy, with or without medication.
Are psychiatric medications addictive?
Most are not. Some classes, such as benzodiazepines, can cause dependence with long-term use and are used carefully. Any discontinuation should be gradual and supervised.
Does the practice accept health insurance?
No. Appointments are private, and the fee is given when you book.
Does Dr. Petrus see children and adolescents?
No. Care is for adults and older adults.
How do video consultations work?
By video call, with the same confidentiality as in-person visits, when Dr. Petrus considers them safe and appropriate. Some prescriptions for controlled medications in Brazil require a paper copy.
In what language are appointments held?
Please ask the practice team about the consultation language when booking.
Is the appointment confidential?
Yes. Consultations are protected by medical confidentiality. Information is shared only with the patient's authorization or as required by law.
Where is the practice?
